An executive producer of queer military drama Boots has revealed where season two would have taken the show’s story, had it not been cancelled by Netflix after just one season.
On 15 December, it was confirmed that the beloved coming of age story, which starred Miles Heizer as closeted military recruit-in-training Cameron Cope, would not be returning for a second season. That’s despite the show achieving an impressive 90 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Speaking to Variety, executive producer Brent Miller said that while he was disappointed at the series being axed, he remained “grateful” and “proud” that the show was made in the first place.
He went on to reveal what would have been in store for Cameron and his fellow bootcamp attendees if Boots had been renewed.
“Our creator, Andy Parker, had always intended to take the boys to war in a season two,” Miller explained.

Miller was the producing partner of TV legend Norman Lear, who was Boots’ leading producer before his death from cardiac arrest as a result of heart failure in 2023. He was 101, and Boots was his final project.
After news of the show’s cancellation spread, a number of its actors shared their sadness and disappointment, including Heizer.
Writing on Instagram on 16 December, the former 13 Reasons Why actor posted a carousel of photographs of himself with the cast.
“Well, I’m sad to report that Boots isn’t being renewed for a second season,” he wrote in the post’s caption.
“I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support they gave this show. It truly shattered my expectations, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
“I grew up so afraid of what being gay would mean for my life. So to be on the other side of that, feeling so uplifted and supported, is still insane to me,” he continued.
“Yes, I’m pretty disappointed we won’t be returning. But the friends I made and being called woke garbage by the pentagon are things I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
Despite being based on the memoir The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White – which details the writer’s real-life experience of being a gay man in a military boot camp at a time when being gay in the US armed forces was illegal – the Pentagon still slammed Netflix for promoting “woke garbage” by releasing Boots.
White also addressed the show being cancelled on his Instagram account, by sending “love and gratitude” to anyone who watched the show and therefore learnt his story.
“I’m heartbroken not to have another season, but I’m sopping wet with gratitude over the reception and love you’ve given us. Please follow our actors, writers, directors and production team & support their dreams coming true as well,” he wrote.
Boots season one is streaming now on Netflix.
