Billy Porter is on the road to a “full recovery” after a “very challenging four months” which included a stint in hospital.

In September, Porter was diagnosed with a “serious case of sepsis.” As a result, the stage and screen star had to leave Broadway’s Cabaret.

Porter, 56, shared an update on his health on Monday (22 December) in a video posted to Instagram.

“I’m here, first and foremost, to say happy holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah, and everything in between,” Porter began.

Addressing his condition, the actor continued: “So, some of you may or may not know that I was in the hospital very ill this fall with Urosepsis.

“It was not easy. It’s been a very, very challenging four months. And I want everybody to know that I am on the road to a full recovery. I’m not there yet, but I’m on the road to that.”

Visibly emotional, the Pose star added: “And I wanted to thank everybody for your prayers and your love and sending me all the vibes. I felt every single one of them. And I know that I’m alive today because of my fans.”

In the same post Porter also included a promo picture for his new film Christmas Karma, which is a retooling of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol.

Sepsis occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection and can be life threatening. Urosepsis is a particular form of sepsis caused by bacteria from a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) entering the bloodstream.

Porter’s unexpected exit from Cabaret meant the show was forced to shut down a month early.
