Canada’s Drag Race contestant Tara Nova has come out as a transgender woman, writing in a moving post on Instagram that she is “finally ready to open up” about her transition.
Tara, who appeared on season five of Canada’s Drag Race in 2024/5, shared the news via Instagram on 5 January, posting a series of selfies plus a black square with “So, yeah I’m trans” written on it in white.
“Today I turn 25. Today is also the day that I’ve decided I’m finally ready to open up about my own personal journey,” she shared in the post’s caption.
“This past year I’ve been medically transitioning, meaning I’ve been undergoing HRT [Hormone Replacement Therapy], and doing it mostly under wraps until I worked up enough courage to let my family know. Now I’m ready for everyone to be on the same page.”
She added: “My name is Tara, my pronouns are she/her.”
The Newfoundland and Labrador-based performer explained that while “hormones are no joke,” she is “so happy and incredibly emotional” to share her truth.
“Everything is exactly how it has to be and I’m excited to live this life and take on my new big old sexy age,” she rounded off.
Tara’s post was flooded with love from her Canada’s Drag Race co-stars and fans of the Drag Race franchise, with her season five sister Perla writing: “MY CAPRICORN SISTER BIRTHDAY ANNNNNDDD DOLL ANNOUNCEMENT?! An icon.”
Sanjina DaBish Queen, who also appeared on Canada’s Drag Race season five and is trans, shared a number of emojis, including the heart-eyed emoji and teary-eyed emoji.
“Welcome to the dollhouse sister,” wrote Edmonton drag performer Onika Xtravaganza.
On Canada’s Drag Race, Tara Nova placed 11th out of 12 queens on season five, being sent home by Tiffany Ann Co. following an acting challenge.
She has appeared on season six of the Brooke Lynn Hytes-hosted spin-off competition – in spirit – having made the outfit worn by trans contestant Eboni La’Belle during round one of the lip-sync battle in episode six.
Last year, a number of Drag Race queens came out as trans, including season nine fan favourite Valentina and fellow Canada’s Drag Race star, Aimee Yonce Shennel.
