The latest teaser for Avengers: Doomsday has dropped online and sees James Marsden return in dramatic fashion

The fifth Avengers film will see characters from across the Marvel multiverse crossover as they confront perhaps their biggest threat ever, Dr Doom (Robert Downey Jr).

Marvel has so far released three trailers ahead of the highly anticipated event in December, each focusing on a different character.

The first confirmed Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) would return, with the second revolving around Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

The third focuses on the characters of the Hugh Jackman-led X-Men films, namely Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Cyclops (Marsden).

The short teaser shows different parts of Xavier’s school for mutants – people born with incredible powers – in ruin as search lights dance around.

“Death comes for us all,” says the Professor. “It’s all I know for sure,” replies Magneto. He continues: “The question isn’t are you prepared to die, the question is who will you be when you close your eyes.”

We then see the two old friends together by a chess board, a favourite pastime of theirs.

The trailer then cuts to a battle worn and emotional Cyclops. He removes the visor holding back his optic blasts and unleashes his full devastating potential as he screams.

Meanwhile, giant boots can be seen in the background. These most likely belong to the mutant-hunting robots of the X-Men universe called Sentinels. Who’s controlling them, however, remains to be seen.

The short teaser has been celebrated by Marvel fans for putting the heroes in their comic book accurate costumes.

The last time we saw Marsden as Cyclops was at the tail end of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. That film ret-conned the events of X-Men: The Last Stand in which the character was killed off.

McKellen was also last seen as Magneto in Days of Future Past. Meanwhile, Stewart was last seen as Professor X in 2017’s Logan.

Avengers: Doomsday will see the X-Men meet The Fantastic Four as well as the Avengers and the New Avengers/Thunderbolts as they try and stop Doom from executing whatever plan he has.

The film will star Downey Jr, Evans, Hemsworth, Marsden, Stewart, McKellen, as well as Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, and Channing Tatum from the X-Men films.

Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn will feature as The Fantastic Four.

And Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Florence Pugh, and Tenoch Huerta will also star.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on 18 December 2026.
