The creators of Stranger Things have shared their take on one of the biggest questions fans have had since the finale: What happened to Robin (Maya Hawke) and Vickie (Amybeth McNulty)?

Spoiler alert: this article contains spoilers for the final episode of Stranger Things.

The sci-fi series ended on New Year’s Day with the release of the season five finale that saw our intrepid heroes finally take down Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and close the door to The Upside Down.

Fans also watched as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) seemingly sacrificed herself for the greater good. Though whether she actually survived or not has been left open to interpretation.

It’s one of many things discussed ad nauseam since the finale. Among them: What happened to the series’ only queer relationship?

In the epilogue, Vickie is noticeably absent despite having a significant role in season five. She and Robin also brought most of the LGBTQ+ representation to the series, with the addition of Will (Noah Schnapp).

Robin shares in the epilogue she’s studying at Smith College but commits to meeting up regularly with Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) despite “overbearing significant others”.

This throwaway comment suggests Robin and Vickie have broken up but no concrete in universe answer is given.

Since the finale aired, Matt and Ross Duffer have done numerous interviews answering such lingering questions.

And sitting down with the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast the pair offered their take on Robin and Vickie.

“It’s definitely implied that it did not work out,” started Matt. He went on to say: “How many couples do you know that were in high school that when they went to different colleges stayed together? It’s like zero.”

While Ross countered: “It’s not zero,” pointing to Max (Sadie Sink) and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), who are confirmed to have lasted as a pair, Matt added they were “one in a million”.

The Duffers also confirmed Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) go the distance and that there could be hope for Jonathan and Nancy post-epilogue.

Matt gave a similar answer to Entertainment Weekly last week while Ross was more willing to keep the answer vague.

Even so, the pair have done little to quell the frustration from fans regarding Robin and Vickie.

On Instagram, one person commented on a clip from Happy, Sad, Confused: “Great. Amazing bro.”

Someone else blasted the pair saying: “They’re so lazy for these answers.” Another person said: “I shouldn’t have to imagine why Robin and Vickie broke up, that’s poor writing.”

And it would seem Matt Duffer is also unhappy. He told the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast he regrets doing as many post-finale interviews.

“Why the hell did we do any of them yesterday is beyond me,” he said. “I’m like fried. I was getting over the flu. So, anyone mad at any answers we gave you yesterday, just cut me some slack.”

Stranger Things is streaming now on Netflix.
