The Traitors winner Rachel Duffy has announced that her mother, who she planned to spend her prize money on, has died.
Duffy, who won the latest series alongside fellow Traitor Stephen Libby took to Instagram on Tuesday (27 January) to share the news.
She wrote on her Instagram Story: “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our beautiful wee mummy. We kindly ask for privacy as our family grieves during this difficult time.”
The heartbreaking news comes after Duffy, who on 23 January became the first female to win a UK series as a Traitor, and her fellow traitor Libby shared victory and the £95,750 prize pot (£47,875 each).
During her time on the show, Duffy spoke often about her mother, Anne, 70, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in her forties and later dementia. She shared that she wanted to spend the prize money on making memories with her mum.
She shared in an Instagram post: “Mummy was just 47 when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, four years older than I am now, and faces dementia, but still amazes me and my family every single day.
“Everything she has done for me and my four siblings is nothing short of incredible. Sharing caring responsibilities over the years for her has been a privilege and we are so proud to call her our mum.”
Upon winning, Duffy revealed that she had entered the series for Anne, who was a big fan of the show.
In an update a day after winning, she said: “It’s a hard one because the show was recorded in May so at that time her condition wasn’t as severe as it is now, so she’s not fit to travel as much.
“We’re trying to do something closer to home so I can’t wait to just sit in front of her and say, ‘Mummy, what do you want to do, what can we do that you would just love?’ God only knows what she’s going to say, but I can’t wait.”
