Scottish ice hockey team Fife Flyers have released a statement due to backlash from fans after they didn’t wear Pride-themed jerseys during a Pride game.
The Pride event took place on January 31, where the Fife Flyers were competing against the Guildford Flames.
The team wore the Pride jerseys during their warm-up, but changed into their regular uniform for the game.
In a post on their social media, the Fife Flyers said the decision to switch their uniforms before the game was to respect the ‘diversity of background and personal beliefs’ on the team.
Following backlash after the game, they released another statement addressing their decision.
It said: “We want to acknowledge the hurt and disappointment many in our community felt due to our decisions on Pride Night.
“We are truly sorry for the impact this had and understand why it has caused upset amongst the community.
“The Fife Flyers are committed to inclusion and aim to be a welcoming club for the LGBTQ+ community and for everyone who supports our team.
“We will reflect on this, continue listening, and work to ensure our values are better reflected in how we move forward.”
