Lesbian rock and country star Brandi Carlile has announced that she set up a $25,000 grant to help people detained by ICE in Minnesota.

Posting to her social media on 25 January, she released a statement with Looking Out Foundation, the charity she founded, expressing how she is “so heartbroken and angry” about recent ICE activity in the state.

“Over the past month, the community there has continued to set an incredible example for the rest of us, demonstrating the power of uniting to protect our neighbours and defend what is right,” she wrote.

“Last week, in Mexico, members of the Minnesota Bramily organised a vigil for Renee Good and the 32 people who have died in ICE custody since the beginning of 2025.

“Now, more than ever, it is vital that we continue to hold each other and take action to stop the hate that is spreading through our country.”

Carlile is awarding the grant to non-profit The Advocates for Human Rights to help them provide free legal assistance to those in detention.

She also said that she will share resources about community organising and resistance, and how to contact local representatives with concerns about ICE.

“What affects one of us, affects all of us and we need to continue to look out for each other,” the statement concluded.
