‘My fiancé could be the first gay Dutch prime minister’

The LGBTQ+ community are poised and ready as gay politician, Rob Jetten, could soon make history as the Netherlands‘ first gay prime minister.

PinkNews spoke to Rob’s fiancé, hockey player Nicolás Keenan, spoke of what a gay prime minister for the country could represent, as well as what it means to be by his side on a public platform.

He said: “It’s always important to have people that represent or people that you can relate [to] in good positions, like positions where they can show that you can do whatever you want.”

Keenan continued: “It doesn’t matter where you’re from or your sexuality, what you like, what you don’t like.

“I think it opens the door to future young guys, young politicians that really want to become one day something, and they think, ‘OK, he made it, maybe I have a chance also to make it.'”

He went on: “Dutch people are ready for a new energy, and he’s bringing a lot of energy, a lot of positive energy as well, so people are really looking forward to his cycle as a prime minister.”

Keenan also shared how the couple first met and quickly realised their feelings for each other.

“I met Rob in 2022,” he explained. “I didn’t know he was a politician at first, so it was a really big surprise for me.

“All the people were really into our relationship. They wanted to know more how we met, how is it going as a couple, what we try or like as a person.

“We try to show [our] true self, we don’t really want to tell people what to do or what they cannot do, so it’s just what you see of us is what we are, and I think it’s quite powerful.”
