Nick Minaj’s descent into the MAGA vortex shows no signs of stopping after she was seen performing TikTok dances with Scott Bessent.
The Trinidadian rapper, 43, shocked fans last month after she appeared on stage with US president Donald Trump, calling herself his “number one fan”.
Minaj has faced criticism over the past few weeks for parroting right-wing, often anti-LGBTQ+, rhetoric, alienating her historically large queer fan base who have now dubbed her “MAGA Minaj”, and doubling down on her views on trans youth.
The Starships singer’s latest right-wing exploit saw her perform viral TikTok dances with treasury secretary Bessent, who is gay, in an awkward 20-second clip.
The video, accompanied by a mash-up of What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes and Minaj’s 2012 single Beez in the Trap, was published as part of the government’s Trump Accounts initiative, which allows children to create stock market investment accounts.
Bessent, 63, became the first out gay man to head the Treasury Department after he was appointed to the position in January 2025. He has been branded a “traitor” by many within the community over his silence on Trump’s anti-LGBTQ+ attacks.
While undoubtedly cringe-worthy, the clip is far from the most controversial thing “MAGA Minaj” has done over the past few weeks.
Speaking on the Katie Miller Podcast, Minaj parroted numerous right-wing conspiracies – from lies about gender-affirming care for trans minors to believing the moon landing was fake – while saying that the backlash she had received had only pushed her further right.
She said she related to Trump, claiming he had been subjected to a “bullying” campaign which, she said, had happened to her in the past.
“I was watching it in real time happen to someone else, and I didn’t think he deserved it,” she said.
Trump continues ICE operation despite deaths
Her comments come after two people were shot dead on separate occasions during Operation Metro Surge; a mass deportation campaign in Minneapolis spearheaded by the Trump administration.
US citizens Renée Good and Alex Pretti were both shot dead by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, prompting international backlash over the government’s actions.
As of Wednesday (4 February), ICE says it has detained over 4,000 people since the operation began in December. Many of those detained are US citizens.
Philadelphia resident, Parady La, reportedly died of shock while in an ICE detention centre on 9 January, where he was kept for at least four days.
At least 32 people died in ICE detention centres in 2025, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which cited inadequate food and poor medical care for many of the excess deaths. It was the deadliest year for those in ICE custody in decades.
