Green Day are opening the 2026 Super Bowl on Sunday (8 February) and their involvement has generated quite a bit of interest in frontman Billie Joe Armstrong.

Armstrong, 53, makes up one third of the American rock band, famous for songs such as “American Idiot” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” alongside Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. The band’s performance will mark the 60th anniversary of the Super Bowl incorporating numerous Super Bowl MVPs.

“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” Armstrong said in a statement in January. “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

The Super Bowl will also feature performances from Charlie Puth and Brandi Carlile, the former performing the US national anthem with the latter singing “America the Beautiful.” Coco Jones will give a rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” And of course Bad Bunny will be taking centre stage for the Halftime Show.

There’s a healthy LGBTQ+ interest this year what with Carlile performing as well as Bad Bunny, a longtime and vocal ally. But also with Armstrong.

Is Billie Joe Armstrong queer?

Yes, he is. Armstrong discussed being bisexual publicly in an interview with The Advocate in 1995.

What’s he said about being a ‘Bisexual icon’?

Responding to People magazine asking about this in 2024 Armstrong said: “I like it. I think it’s f****** cool that someone calls me a bisexual icon. I’ve seen that before. I’m like, ‘F***, yeah!'”

The Green Day frontman also reflected on the progress made since he addressed his sexuality in 1995. “It’s way more complex now, as far as sexuality,” he said. Armstrong then added: “Even though it’s still kind of looked at as being taboo, I think people now are a lot more brave than they’ve ever been. I think people are way more open now.”

Is Billie Joe Armstrong married?

Armstrong married his wife, Adrienne, in 1994 having met in 1990. The pair have two sons, Joey, 31, and Jakob, 28.

Speaking to People in 2024, Armstrong addressed people’s questions over his sexuality given he’s in a heterosexual-presenting relationship. “Sexuality is always so much more than what the standard, nuclear-family type of way of looking at things,” he told the publication.

“But I have been married – there’s this other side of me that’s very conventional when it comes to my 30-year marriage to my wife. But I just look at sexuality: It’s not one way or the other. And if anybody ever tries to say that, I don’t think they’re really being honest with themselves.”

Is Billie Joe Armstrong a trans ally?

He is, indeed. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in 2024, called transphobes “f****** close-minded”.

Armstrong added: “It’s like people are afraid of their children. Why would you be afraid? Why don’t you let your kid just be the kid that they are?”
