Congressman demands official probe into Bad Bunny’s ‘pornographic’ Super Bowl show

US Representative Andy Ogles, a Tennessee Republican, called for a congressional investigation over Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show on 8 February over subject matter he deemed to be “gay pornography”.

Posting to his Facebook on 9 February, Ogles wrote: “Last night’s halftime show was a disgrace, and it mocked American families. Depicting gay pornography on prime time has no place in our culture. The Bad Bunny performance is conclusive proof that Puerto Rico should never be a state.”

Ogles then said in a longer statement that the show was “pure smut, brazenly aired on national television for every American family to witness,” claiming that “children were forced to endure explicit displays of gay sexual acts, women gyrating provocatively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping the air.”

He added that the performance’s lyrics “openly glorified sodomy and countless other unspeakable depravities”.

Ogles followed those posts with a formal letter dated 9 February to Alabama Republican US Rep. Brett Guthrie, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, requesting a congressional inquiry into the NFL and NBCUniversal to examine what executives and standards staff knew in advance, which review and approval processes were used, whether delay protocols were applied, and what the broader implications were for broadcaster accountability.

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX halftime show was a landmark performance for queer visibility and celebration of diversity, filled to the brim with celebrity appearances from Karol G, Cardi B, Young Miko and Pedro Pascal –  and surprise special guest performances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin.

During the section of the show in which Bad Bunny sang his hit ‘EoO’, a quick shot of two dancers grinding on each other in the open door of the pickup truck Bad Bunny was standing on became a standout viral moment for LGBTQ+ fans.
