Dylan Mulvaney has made her debut as Anne Boleyn in Broadway’s Six The Musical at the Lena Horne Theatre.
Mulvaney gave her first performance Boleyn on February 16, a month after the announcement of her casting.
As well as Mulvaney, Abigail Barlow joined as Katherine Howard. Meanwhile, Adrianna Hicks, Anna Uzele, and Olivia Donalson are returning as Catherine of Aragon, Catherine Parr, and Anne of Cleves.
Sadly, Mulvaney’s casting was almost overshadowed by intense backlash.
Six was forced to lock its X account after being subject to a torrent of abuse from largely right-wing or gender-critical accounts, or other “anti-woke” individuals. Much of the criticism centred around the fact a trans woman was playing a cisgender woman, while some complained about Mulvaney’s lack of theatrical talent or experience.
Mulvaney later responded to the backlash on TikTok as part of her “Days of Girlhood” series.
“I’ve gotten so many lovely messages since this was announced, especially from folks that have followed me since the beginning of my journey. I just want to thank you so much and I hope you get to enjoy this as much as I do,” she said, before briefly turning her attention to the trolls.
“I’ve also gotten some not so lovely messages questioning my abilities, or just hating in general. My first instinct was to come on her and try to convince those people that I do have what it takes to be a Broadway performer and to tell you why. Then I realised that I shouldn’t waste my breath on that because this is a miracle,” she said.
“It’s a miracle for anyone to make it to Broadway. There are so many incredible performers that deserve to be and I genuinely hope that they will.”
