Keke Palmer says she’s ‘almost sure’ she’s asexual in candid sexuality chat

Actress and musician Keke Palmer is getting candid about her sexuality, revealing that she is “almost sure” that she identifies as asexual.

On 15 February, the One of Them Days actress, 32, addressed her fans with a post reflecting on her Valentine’s Day experience the previous day.

“Chile, let’s talk about it,” she wrote, alongside several professional photos of herself wearing a cream bustier and matching satin skirt.

“How was your Valentine’s Day? I spent mine with my mom, sister and son. Then went to a colleagues [sic] smashing birthday bash. Yea, I said smashing. Absolutely nothing romantic went down, crazy right! I’m so cute!”

The comedian went on to speak about how she labels her sexuality now, almost ten years after saying that she doesn’t wish to “limit” herself with a label.

“I like no one and I’m almost 100% sure I’m asexual. I have no interest in anyone, but I wish I did,” she wrote, before asking her fans to sound off about their own Valentine’s Day experience in the comments.

“Asexual” is an umbrella term encompassing people whose sexual identity is defined by their lack of sexual attraction to other people, or their lack of desire for sexual intimacy.

The asexual spectrum includes other labels such as demisexual – whereby a person only feels sexual attraction to someone they have formed an emotional bond with – and aromantic, which defines those who feel little to no romantic connection with people.

Entertainers including Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman, actress Michaela Coel, and actor Tim Gunn have previously spoken about being on the asexual spectrum.

Back in 2017, Palmer appeared on The Wendy Williams Show, where the no-nonsense chat show host asked her about her sexuality.

“I like whoever loves me,” she said, declining to put a label on herself.

“I’m the kind of person that at the end of the day, love is defined by the individual. What I feel today is not necessarily what I may feel five years from now. I don’t want to limit myself to one feeling or one idea of anything.”

Palmer later addressed her sexuality in 2023, while being honoured with the Vanguard Award by the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

“I’ve always been my own person. Sexuality and identity for me has always been confusion,” the Nope star shared.

“You know, it’s, ‘I never felt straight enough. I never felt gay enough. And I never felt woman enough. I never felt man enough.’ You know, I always felt like I was a little bit of everything.”

She’s also previously explained that she first developed feelings for other women from a young age.

In the comment section of her post, Palmer’s fans thanked her for speaking honestly about her experience with romance.

Her One of Them Days co-star, musician SZA, wrote: “Ur actually WAY too advanced for anyone I could even think of.”
