Tell Me Lies star Cat Missal reveals she’s gay as show comes to end

Tell Me Lies actor Cat Missal has confirmed that she is gay, revealing that she is currently in a relationship with a woman.

The 26-year-old American actress plays Bree in hit Hulu series Tell Me Lies, which came to a close following the recently-released third season.

Speaking to Teen Vogue about the show’s end – the last episode aired on 17 February – Missal succinctly explained why she won’t have to deal with the types of toxic men that defined Tell Me Lies.

“Well, I am gay, so thank God,” she told the publication, while sat next to her partner, Jess Panneton. Panneton chimed in to the conversation, telling Missal: “You’re safe with me.”

Missal, who was born Catherine Missal and uses she/they pronouns according to their Instagram bio, went on to reveal that the couple live together in San Fernando Valley in California with their cats, Chicken and Bunny.

The sweet couple met at a drag show in West Hollywood while Missal was out with her siblings. After bumping into Panneton, Missal instantly thought she was “so cool”.

“It just felt kismet because [Missal’s siblings] were like, ‘Who are you flirting with? Who’s that?’ And now we’re all family,” Missal recalled.

Missal and Panneton made several public appearances together prior to confirming their relationship. They were spotted arm-in-arm in Los Angeles in January, and appeared by each other’s side at the LA premiere of new film Send Help last month too.

They appeared hand-in-hand at an event hosted by The Hollywood Reporter early this month.

The Tell Me Lies finale was fittingly explosive, rounding off three seasons of lies, manipulation, and frankly vile characters. The series, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Carola Lovering, finished off with a flash forward to Bree and Evan’s (Branden Cook) wedding in 2015.

It’s revealed that Bree is the one who leaked the tape of her best friend Lucy (Grace Van Patten) confessing to lying about being sexually assaulted, after Bree discovered that Lucy and Evan had slept together prior to their wedding. Stephen (Jackson White), Lucy’s boyfriend, had been holding the tape over her, but their dysfunctional relationship looks likely to continue beyond the show’s end, as they were seen driving off into the sunset – if not into their happy ever after.

Bree and Lucy left the show by going their separate ways, with Bree stating there’s no way they can be friends if she stays with Stephen, the show’s most toxic export. During her chat with Teen Vogue, Missal said that she hopes that beyond the show, the characters would eventually find each other again.

“I truly think friendship can stand the test of anything,” she said. “Even though they’ve done toxic things to each other, they do love each other genuinely. I think that’s where a lot of the heart of the show lies, too, within their friendship, even though it’s built on lies.”

Tell Me Lies is streaming on Hulu and on Disney+ and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
