The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing’s (NASCAR) Daniel Dye has been suspended after facing accusations of homophobia.

Dye has been suspended indefinitely from the sport after being accused of using a homophobic voice to mock David Malukas, his IndyCar rival, during a livestream.

On Tuesday (17 March), the organisation announced that the 22-year-old will be required to complete sensitivity training before being considered for reinstatement.

Kaulig Racing also announced that the team has suspended Dye effective immediately, “after becoming aware (Tuesday) of comments he made on social media”.

Dye took to social media on Tuesday evening to apologise, acknowledging that he had “made some careless comments” and understands the upset caused.

The Kaulig Racing star continued, adding that he has friends in the LGBTQ+ community, who he has spoken to and realised that “a true friend would know better than to act the way I did”.

“I didn’t think enough before I spoke, and I in no way meant any harm. I know that intention does not erase impact, and I need to do better,” his statement added.

Dye concluded that he will educate himself and listen to the community to ensure his “actions reflect respect and inclusivity going forward”.

What did Daniel Dye say?

Dye made the offensive comments while discussing his experience around NTT IndyCar Series driver David Malukas, who frequently shares insight into his relationship with his girlfriend, Kamila Jurkus, on social media.

In a clip circulating on social media, the Kaulig Racing star is seen mocking Malukas.

During the livestream while opening trading cards, Dye appears to question Malukas’ sexuality while mimicking his voice in a homophobic tone.

“I was like, ‘Do y’all race any ovals?’” Dye said on the stream. “And he was, like, distraught that I asked him that question. He was like, ‘Yeah, we race Nashville and Iowa …’ I was like, ‘I didn’t know Miatas went to Nashville.’”

He then put on an impression of a higher-pitched voice and said: “He’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, yas, we race Indianapolis, too.

“Love Indianapolis. And Roger Penske. I love Roger. Love you, Roger!’” Dye imitated, shaking his head as part of the impersonation.

He added: “As soon as I start doing a David Malukas gay voice, I hit a gold (card, in the pack). So let’s keep it going.”
