Meryl Streep has said Anne Hathaway challenged producers of The Devil Wears Prada 2 after they saw “alarmingly thin” runway models during Milan Fashion Week, securing assurances the film would not feature models who were “so skeletal”. The comments appear in a Harper’s Bazaar cover story published ahead of the sequel’s 1 May 2026 cinema release.
Streep said: “I was struck by how not only beautiful and young, everyone seems young to me, but alarmingly thin the models were.” She added: “I thought that all had been addressed years ago.”
Streep said Hathaway moved quickly once they had both noticed it. “Annie clocked it too, and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She’s a stand-up girl.”
Milan Fashion Week scenes

The cast attended real runway shows while filming last September, including Dolce & Gabbana’s show at Milan Fashion Week. A sequel was announced as being in the works in 2024, with David Frankel returning to direct.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites Hathaway and Streep with Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. The film is set to open in cinemas on 1 May 2026.
Streep on the filming frenzy
Streep also described the scale of attention around filming, saying: “We needed police barriers and crowd control. Buses of fans turned up, and paparazzi swarmed and in one case kept jumping in front of the camera and the shot and got in a kerfuffle with crew! Annie kept her cool, but I was unnerved.”
Hathaway has spoken publicly over the years about body image pressures and the scrutiny placed on women’s appearances. She has also been a regular red-carpet bellwether, with a first look at her in the sequel fuelling intense online chatter, and she is set to appear in Mother Mary, which released its first trailer last year.
