Nonbinary doctor sues hospital after allegedly being told to hide identity

A nonbinary doctor is suing a hospital group in New York City

A nonbinary doctor has filed a federal lawsuit against New York City Health + Hospitals, alleging they were forced to conceal their identity and ultimately pushed out of their role.

Danielle Peterson, a former dermatology resident, claims they were told “not to tell anyone” about being nonbinary when they started the programme.

The lawsuit describes an allegedly hostile workplace, including claims of repeated misgendering, derogatory comments about trans and nonbinary people, and senior staff questioning Peterson’s identity and appearance.

It also alleges Peterson was told there was ‘something mentally wrong’ with them and was pressured to undergo a psychiatric evaluation or risk losing their position.

Two independent evaluators later cleared Peterson for work, but they say they were still removed from clinical duties and eventually had their contract non-renewed.

The non-renewal came months after Peterson filed a formal discrimination complaint, reports Human Resources Director.

New York City Health + Hospitals has not yet responded to the lawsuit, and no determination has been made. A jury trial has been requested.
