MAFS Australia viewers have accused late-arrival groom Tyson Gordon of “homophobia and misogyny” after he complained about gay people “pushing” their sexuality and said he wanted a “submissive, feminine woman”.
Tyson said on Married at First Sight Australia that he was hoping to be matched with a “submissive, feminine woman”. Then, during a pre-wedding discussion about same-sex marriage, he said: “That doesn’t bother me too much. What bothers me if it gets pushed in my face.”
He continued: “I don’t like when gay guys come up to me. I’m not gay. That’s on you guys. Whatever you do behind closed doors…”

Viewers of the episode, which aired in the UK on 31 March but weeks ago in Australia, were disgusted. One said on X: “I am actually quite concerned that they have let someone like Tyson join this show.”
Another said: “Nothing about the words that came out of his mouth should have been heard. What a terrible day to have ears.”
Someone else wrote: “Where the f*** did they dig Tyson up from? The 1820s? Get in the f****** sea with your ‘masculine energy’ and your Andrew Tate online courses. Worst type.”
Tyson’s views were also shown raising concerns with his on-screen bride, Stephanie. He was upset she was two years older than him, having asked the experts for a woman younger than him, and described her as coming across as “woke”.
The former military man also heaped praise on US President Donald Trump, saying: “I reckon he’s doing a great job.”
Tyson responds
After the episode aired in Australia, Tyson told Daily Mail: “I knew I was going to be the villain.” He also claimed: “The producers told me I was going to be one of the most controversial characters they’ve ever had. So when someone tells you that, you go along with it.”
Tyson later suggested he would rephrase how he described his ideal relationship dynamic, saying he should have said he wanted a “traditional, not subservient woman”, adding: “I don’t want a dog.” He also said: “If I had my time again, I would do things very differently,” as the reaction continued.
MAFS and LGBTQ+ representation
The currently-airing season of MAFS Australia features bisexual bride Julia Vogl, who was matched with a man, Grayson McIvor. She has complained that she was “reduced to her sexuality” during her time on the show.
The franchise has featured plenty of other LGBTQ+ people over the years, including in the 2026 Australia season.
The final couple to join the show are Chris Robinson and Sam Stanton. Their wedding will air in the UK on 1 April.
Meanwhile, in 2023, the UK version of the show featured the first ever trans bride, Ella Morgan.
Married at First Sight Australia airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on E4.
