It’s the movie that’s got everyone talking: Blue Film. Elliot Tuttle’s feature film debut has made waves with its risqué plot.

Dealing with taboo themes, erotic gay sex and controversial age-gap relationships, Blue Film has caused quite the stir. So much so, it’s even been reported that viewers have walked out of screenings.

As Blue Film’s release date draws closer, here’s everything you need to know about the controversial film:

Kieron Moore stars as Aaron. He's topless, lying down and looking up at the camera with a vape in his hand.

What is the plot of Blue Film?

Blue Film follows fetish camboy Aaron agreeing to spend the night with an anonymous client, a much older man named Hank.

Aaron, whose real name is Alex, soon realises that his client isn’t entirely anonymous; the pair have a shared history.

As revealed in the trailer, when Aaron sees Hank for the first time, he calls him Mr Grant. It becomes clear that Hank is Aaron’s former teacher. From this point, their night takes unexpected turns.

Who stars in Blue Film?

Actor Kieron Moore, known for Boots, Vampire Academy and Code of Silence, plays Aaron Eagle. He’s a young man drawn to sex work for the money.

Additionally, The Menu and American Horror Story actor Reed Birney stars opposite Moore as Hank.

The film is really a two-hander between Moore and Birney, both of whom have been praised by critics.

Why is Blue Film controversial?

Even before the film had its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last August, it was already deemed polarising.

The film was too controversial for the Sundance and SXSW festivals. Speaking to Variety last year, Tuttle explained the “powers that be” at prominent festivals were “scared of the movie.”

Tuttle continued: “It was unbelievable to me. I believe in the quality of the film, and I also had a hard time believing American festivals were this risk-averse.

“It feels like it kind of took one festival saying, ‘No, it’s OK to program it,’ for lots of other festivals to come on board.”

Additionally, Birney told Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t think I thought that it was gonna be as controversial as it was, which is kind of foolish in retrospect.

“Of course, it was gonna be controversial, but I just think I thought it was such a beautiful character study.”
