Right-winger gamers are furious about The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and have labelled it “woke”.
The remake of the 2006 role-playing title was released by publisher and developer Bethesda Game Studios on Tuesday (22 April). The fourth instalment in The Elder Scrolls series, considered by many to be the best of the franchise, involves players taking the role of the Hero of Kvatch – a customisable character whose story the player can influence – as they explore the vast green fields of Cyrodiil, as well as the fiery denizens of Oblivion.
Players have already sung the praises of the reboot, which comes complete with new graphics and tightened gameplay, and the game has received a “very positive” score on PC marketplace Steam from the 9,110 reviews so far.
However, some right-wing gamers have branded the remake a “woke” insult to their favourite fantasy game.
Former video game developer Mark “Grummz” Kern, appeared far from pleased that an option which originally allowed players to change between male and female has been modified to refer to body types.

Writing on X/Twitter, he complained that there was “zero need to change this”, and called on Bethesda to “bring back the original male/female” options.
Another user claimed that, because the terms “male and female” had been removed, it meant The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered “forces you to play as a transgender character”.
PinkNews can confirm after much research that body types do not equate to gender identity, and that trans people can identify as male or female.
The angry gamers were ridiculed by others online. Forbes journalist Paul Tassi said it had only been a matter of time before right-wingers found a reason to label the game woke.
Someone else wrote: “People will b***h about anything nowadays, it’s stupid. [Shut the f**k up] and play the game.”
When one disgruntled gamer argued that the change was unnecessary and that “wokeness” had “proven to be unprofitable,” Tassi responded by pointing out that Elden Ring has the same body-type options and was reported to have sold 28.6 million copies by last September, making it one of the best-selling video games of all time.
