The L Word star Jennifer Beals has sent sapphics spiralling after flirting with pop star Kelly Clarkson during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Beals appeared on Clarkson’s NBC morning talk show earlier this week to talk about her new photo book The L Word: A Photographic Journal, which includes behind-the-scenes snaps from her time on the groundbreaking lesbian noughties TV hit.

As Beals explained why she wanted to create the photography book, Clarkson gushed over her “quietly sexy” voice.

“I wish I had your voice by the way. You’re so quietly sexy. It is amazing,” Clarkson said, with a shocked Beals retorting: “Oh my God?!”

“I’m very loud and it’s so beautiful. You have such a beautiful speaking voice,” the “Breakaway” singer continued.

Snagging her moment, Beals – who is almost 20 years Clarkson’s senior – joked: “I heard you like your women older or something?”

The audience then erupted into rapturous cheers, as Clarkson herself clapped ecstactially and practically folded in on herself laughing.

“I had to get that in, I had to! A friend of mine made me do that,” Beals added.

The Flashdance actress was referring to a recent viral clip from Clarkson’s regular “Kellyoke” segment on her show, where she performs covers of beloved songs.

In February, while covering “Your Love” by all-male British rock band The Outfield, Clarkson winked as she belted out this gem of a lyric: “So many things that I wanna say, you know I like my girls a little bit older.”

The performance immediately did the rounds on sapphic social media, going viral across TikTok and X/Twitter

After Jennifer Beals’ quip, Kelly Clarkson took a moment to explain why she winked during the performance.

“I’ve been winking since the ‘Miss Independent’ video in like 2002 or whatever. I’ve been doing it. Let me explain, you’ll get this. I play characters almost when I’m singing songs, especially when covering songs. I don’t always change the she/he because I don’t think it matters.”

Reflecting on the online reaction to the clip, she added: “I winked on purpose for fun and wow…”

Once again, queer women have reacted with absolutely no cool to Beals and Clarkson’s flirty interaction.

“There is a reason Jennifer Beals is one of the top leading lesbian icons of the last 25 years… cos she just keeps giving! Kelly I don’t know if you understand the magnitude of this interaction,” one shared.

“I love Jennifer Beals for this!! Was Kelly blushing? And Kelly talking about Jennifer’s sexy voice… Now I’m flustered,” added a second.

Elsewhere in her chat with Clarkson, Beals reminisced about the impact The L Word had on lesbian and queer women everywhere.

Beals played artsy lesbian Bette Porter on the cherished show, later reviving her role for the short-lived recent reboot, The L Word: Generation Q.

“It changed everything for me,” Beals shared.

“I had always hoped that somewhere some young queer girl would be inspired by the show and that she was living in the middle of nowhere and she has no access to the community… those [fan] letters when they came in were reflective of that, and they were just so beautiful about how the show made them feel seen.”
