The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has shared CCTV images of three men suspected of assaulting a 61-year-old transgender woman.

The incident occurred on 8 April while the victim was inside her store in Westlake, a residential neighbourhood in Los Angeles.

One of the suspects entered the store and began flirting with her. After she rejected his advances, he left but returned later and pushed her to the ground. The suspect sexually assaulted her before realising she was transgender.

According to the LAPD, the suspect pulled away and threatened to kill her. He returned on a number of other occasions with two other men and the store owner was again assaulted.

In separate incidents, the victim was hit with a skateboard, pepper-sprayed, had an unknown liquid thrown at them, and threatened with a Taser.

A report published last year revealed that 75 per cent of all transgender individuals killed in the US in the previous 12 months were people of colour.

Between November 2023 and November 2024, at least 36 trans or gender-expansive people had been killed, the study revealed. Close to 78 per cent were transgender women.
