Madonna has reportedly partnered with the streaming giant Netflix, as well as director Shawn Levy, to produce a limited TV series all about her life.
The announcement on Monday (12 May) comes after years of work on, and speculation about, a movie biopic detailing Madonna‘s rise to fame.
The news was broken by Deadline, who reported that Madge is working with Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy and 21 Laps on the project. Deadline also reported that the “Vogue” singer, 66, and Levy “had been discussing the project for a while.”
In regard to the previously teased and long-awaited film version of Madonna’s life story, the report stated that the new project is “starting from scratch.”
Julia Garner will “most likely” play Madonna
Last year it was announced that the three-time Emmy winner, Julia Garner, the start of Ozark and Inventing Anna, had landed the role of the Queen of Pop following a reported “Madonna boot camp”, which actresses including Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, and Odessa Young attended.
Deadline also reported that Garner “has remained engaged” and “would most likely play Madonna, subject of availability.”

The series is said to be in the “early days of development” and it is unclear whether the series will focus on a particular period of the ‘Lucky Star’ singer’s life and career.
The report also is unclear as to Madonna’s exact involvement in the production as she had been writing the now-ditched feature film with Universal Pictures. She was also set to direct.
Talking about the film when it was announced in 2020, Madonna said: “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world.”
In early 2023, it was confirmed that the biopic had been paused indefinitely. The singer then updated fans on the film’s progress last November, hinting it could become a TV series.
Sharing in a since-deleted Instagram post that she had been “struggling for days” listening to people explain why the biopic hadn’t yet come to fruition she said, “Downsize – down scale – think smaller, they say – I realised that everything in my life is going to be challenged. No easy rides for me.”
She then put: “Should I make the story of my life into a series or a feature film?”
The idea of turning it into a series was a hit with fans with one saying a series made “total sense.”
Another wrote: “You’ve had enough things happen in your life to have at least one episode for each decade of your gracing us with your presence, and then some – a full series would give you the scope to explore so much of your life.”
Someone else put: “Each episode presenting different eras. 2 hours [feature film] wouldn’t be enough for 4 decades. Maybe a Netflix series. It’s gonna be HUGE!”
