Fans of the US version of The Office have another reason to look forward to the spin-off series, The Paper, because Oscar Nuñez will be reprising his role.

Nuñez played accountant Oscar Martinez in the American version of Ricky Gervais’ mockumentary series, which ran from 2005 to 2013. The butt of many a cheap and problematic joke regarding his sexuality, Martinez was mainly a background character in the show that starred Steve Carell.

The new series will follow The Office‘s documentary crew as they move to The Truth Teller newspaper, in Toledo, Ohio.

“The documentary crew that immortalised Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject, when they discover a historic midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it,” Variety reported.

Footage played for audiences at a presentation in New York on Monday (12 May) showed Nuñez’s character working for the paper and “none too happy to see the doc crew again”.

According to Out, the Cuban-born actor said: “I told [creator] Greg Daniels that if Oscar came back, he would probably be living in a more bustling, cosmopolitan city.

Speaking at the screening, Nuñez added: “Greg heard me and moved Oscar to Toledo, which has three times the population of Scranton. It was nice to be heard.”

The Paper will also feature The White Lotus star Sabrina Impacciatore, as the newspaper’s managing editor, and Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson as a keen new employee.

Queer comedian Alex Edelman and A League of Their Own‘s Gbemisola Ikumelo are also among the cast.

Nuñez has also previously spoken about his character’s sexuality being revealed to his colleagues and about how the on-screen kiss in the third season episode, Gay Witch Hunt, was improvised.

The show was controversial for its handling of Oscar’s sexuality. Some people believed the character was little more than a “gay caricature,” getting no development beyond stereotypes of gay men in the noughties.

The Paper is due to air on Peacock in the US in September. It is not yet known if it will be shown in the UK.
