RuPaul’s Drag Race champion Bob the Drag Queen has just become the first Black queen in history from the franchise to reach 2 million followers on Instagram.
Some queens leave RuPaul’s Drag Race and, politely, fade into obscurity. Others, like Bob the Drag Queen, who triumphed in the eighth season of the flagship franchise in 2016, do the exact opposite.
Just this year, Bob drew blood on The Traitors (as a traitor, no less), wrapped up her role as part of Madonna’s Celebration Tour on Copacabana Beach (to the tune of over 1.6 million people) and became a New York Times Besteller for her debut novel, Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert.
But as Kerri Colby would say: ‘Another one, thank you’. Because as of 25 May, Bob has not only broken the record as the first Black queen from the Drag Race franchise to cross 2 million followers on Instagram – but she is still the only Black queen in the top 10 list of most-followed RuGirls.
Bob the Drag Queen currently has the same amount of followers as season 6 finalist and fan favourite Adore Delano and season seven winner Violet Chachki.
All Stars 2 winner Alaska Thunderf**k, and All Stars 7 champ Jinkx Monsoon are just behind the trio with 1.8 million, and Global All Stars victor Alyssa Edwards has got a cool 1.9m.
Bianca Del Rio (season 6 winner) has 2.5 million, while Katya has 2.8. All Stars 9 legend and social media mogul Plastique Tiara has 4.1 million and Trixie Mattel is sitting pretty in the top sport with 4.2.
Other notable Black queens from the franchise are a way off the 2 million mark yet, despite massive popularity among the Drag Race fandom and beyond; Bob’s little sis, All Stars 4 winner and Sibling Rivalry cohost Monét X Change has 1.2m, Naomi Smalls has 1.4m, Shea Couleé has 1.5 and Symone has 1.1m.
RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 10 will be available to stream on Paramount+ in the US and WOW Presents Plus internationally from 9 May.
