Singer Beth McCarthy goes viral after helping give trans fan their new name

A clip of Beth McCarthy has gone viral after the singer helped a trans fan choose a new name. 

The bisexual singer-songwriter, who uses she/they pronouns, posted a video of the moment on TikTok. The clip, which has been viewed three million times and liked by more than 570,000 people, shows McCarthy at a gig responding to the fan who had asked for help in picking the name. 

“So, your name was David,” McCarthy says, before asking her to hold their hand. “I think the name Luna is really beautiful.” The fan’s mouth drops open and she looks wonderstruck.

“I was gonna save it for me having a kid,” the singer continues, “but you look beautiful and you shine like the moon. Would you like to be called Luna?”

The fan nods and shouts: “Yeah, yes. Thank you so much.” 

Luna and McCarthy then embrace before the former jokes: “I think I’m your kid now. You are adopting me.”

Before dedicating the next song to the fan, McCarthy says: “I love you so much. David no more, we knight you as Luna.”

The “Good Bi” singer captioned the post: “Luna you will forever be in my heart, thank you for giving me the honour to choose your new name. I hope it helps you to shine brighter than you already do.” 

One person wrote under the post: “I love queer joy so much. Watched this with tears of happiness in my eyes. Hope you have a great life with your new name.” 

Another said: “This is my first impression of Beth McCarthy, I am very happy this person exists, this is beautiful.” 

Someone else went with: “As a senior citizen, white guy, I found this heart-warming.” 

McCarthy has previously spoken to PinkNews about bisexual dating, revealing why it was unlikely that they would ever go out with a fan.
