A piece of marketing for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has been deleted after countless gay jokes over its wording: ‘His sub. His rules.’
Released 17 May, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is the eighth instalment of the Mission Impossible film franchise, starring Tom Cruise as the often rogue and somewhat unkillable IMF agent Ethan Hunt.
The film follows Cruise’s Hunt, alongside co-stars Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Nick Offerman, Angela Bassett and more, as he tries to stop the rogue AI known as The Entity.
Along the way, he meets new allies, including Severance‘s Tramell Tillman as Captain Jack Bledsoe, the commanding officer of rescue submarine USS Ohio.
But despite the film’s many nail-biting action sequences, it’s perhaps Mission: Impossible‘s X marketing that has raised the most eyebrows, due to one post’s unfortunate choice of phrase that could be, cough, misconstrued.
“His sub. His rules.” wrote the official account for the film above two photos, one featuring Bledsoe from the film during, and another with Cruise and the film’s crew, both on the submarine.
Apart from, as pointed out by X user @rogueshunt, the post has been deleted because people couldn’t stop making gay jokes about the phrase ‘His sub’, and the connotations that that might have in relation to a Dom/ Sub sexual relationship.

Happily, the picture – complete with caption – remains live on the Mission: Impossible Instagram account, where users have been similarly commenting with humour.
“This caption is crazy,” one wrote, while another added, “His sub is crazy”
“Me as a dom,” someone else commented.
Yet another joked, “‘His sub?’ His name is Ethan ok.”
“Whoever wrote this caption isn’t innocent,” another Instagram profile warned.
Of course, it has not been officially confirmed that the dirty minds of X are why the promo was taken off that one specific platform – but we can hazard a guess.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in cinemas now.
