Almost half the number of people who watch gay male porn on Pornhub were female, new research for Pride month has revealed.
The porn website shares its Pride Insights every year, with a report on the viewing habits of the gay community, revealing various details, including what people have searched for, and the adult performers they like most.
This year, the research showed that 47 per cent of those watching gay porn were women. But this is nothing new. In 2014, Pornhub revealed just how much women enjoyed gay male porn, and the following year the porn site found that content featuring gay men was consistently the second-most-popular category of porn among female visitors to the site.
Over the years, a number of academic studies have also backed up Pornhub’s figures. In 2018, Lucy Neville said she surveyed more than 500 women for her book, Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys, and found that they enjoyed gay porn because “a good number of [them] like looking at naked men”.

Gay porn overturned the “male gaze” because straight porn almost always catered for the sexual desires of straight men, ignoring those attracted to male bodies, such as straight women, Neville added.
Male-on-male porn also allowed female victims of sexual assault and rape to watch sexual content because it was “one of the few types of sexually explicit media they can enjoy without feeling triggered or re-traumatised”, she went on to say. Given that all performers in gay porn were men meant women “don’t have to feel guilty or worried about women performers, wondering if they’re enjoying it, if they’re being exploited, if it hurts, if they really did have an orgasm”.
Pornhub’s Pride Insights also showed that people aged between 18 and 24 were most likely to watch the content (27 per cent). The least likely were those 65 or older, at just 11 per cent.
