There are a lot of folks out there who will be very candid about enjoying a sausage during Pride Month – but they probably aren’t talking about this kind.
We’re actually referring to the LGBT sausage created by Prospect Butcher Co in New York City for Pride Month.
The sausage, made from ingredients that match the LGBT acronym (lemon instead of lesbian, garlic in place of gay, basil in lieu of bisexual and tomato instead of trans), is labelled as “hand cranked and twisted” – a description that did not escape the notice of Instagram users with particularly evocative imaginations.
The team at Prospect Butcher Co shared an image of the sausages on 20 June with the caption: “HAPPY PRIDE MONTH! Celebrating with our LGBT sausage all June long. Lemon zest, garlic, fresh basil, sun-dried tomato- perfect for pasta or for throwing on the grill!🌈”
The post has gone viral with more than 18,000 likes and hundreds of comments, many of which are very tongue-in-cheek.
“Cut or uncut?” one user cheekily asked.
“Ironically it’s how I like my meat handled,” a second said, as another described the picture as a “sausage fest”.
“No LGBT were harmed during the making of this sausage,” a third wrote.
“You guys are the würst 😉,” a fourth couldn’t resist writing.
Another user said “so that’s what it stands for!” in reference to the LGBT acronym whilst others had to make the joke that their, ahem, sausage is “also LGBT”.
Others has a spirited debate about how to include the letter Q, which normally stands for queer, in the sausage’s ingredient list.
“No quince to get the Q in there?” an one person commented, with others replying that Quorn could be “the vegetarian option” or even “you can [use] Q for Quinoa 😀”.
Other comments were… shall we say, less tasteful than others.
“Can you raw dog ram those down your throat?” one user put it bluntly.
“Happy pride put a sausage in your mouth or somewhere else,” another commented. Hear, hear! We, at PinkNews, say to that.
A different person summed it all up pretty accurately: “Comment section passed the vibe check.”
“Passionate about quality meats”
In an email response to PinkNews, Ruth Hunter – social media manager/shop associate at Prospect Butcher Co – said the team “absolutely did NOT expect this much of a response!”
“We love to do fun themed sausage specials for holidays or special events, and the LGBT sausage is definitely a fan favorite, making its way into our rotation quite often outside of Pride month (it’s seriously delicious!),” hunter said.
“The recipe was developed by one of our butchers, Kiera, who is the mastermind behind lots of fan favorites like the Philly Cheesesteak and Kansas City BBQ sausages.
“It has been hilarious to read the comments on this post – all of the innuendos are not lost on us here at PBC! We love that our small celebration of Pride was able to reach so many and show them a bit of the personality of Prospect Butcher Co- welcoming, humorous, and passionate about quality meats!”

The LGBT sausage is certainly not the first time a food item themed for Pride Month has got people talking.
Back in 2019, British high street chain Marks and Spencer (M&) launched an LGBT sandwich with a filling made up of lettuce, guacamole, bacon and tomato.
The supermarket released the BLT-plus-guacamole sandwich to raise money for the Albert Kennedy Trust, a charity dedicated to helping homeless LGBTQ+ youth.
The conversation began when a picture of the sandwich with the caption “M&S threw the first artisanal sandwich at Stonewall,” went viral on Twitter.
Despite the good intentions to raise money for charity, the sandwich got a mixed response from LGBTQ+ folks – who accused the brand of rainbow capitalism – and right-wingers, who were unsurprisingly outraged that something to do with the community was on shelves near them.
“Equating us to a sandwich?,” a user on X, then Twitter, wrote in response. “I can’t imagine them doing this with other marginalised groups.”
Even controversial broadcaster Piers Morgan even weighed in on the matter, accusing M&S of “cynical virtue-signalling” and “truly pathetic” behaviour.
The LGBT sandwich was debated once again in 2024 after a Heritage Party leader David Kurten shared a picture of it on social media decrying “WOKE SANDWICHES”.
“Can one not simply get lunch without being reminded of degeneracy and mutilation?” Kurten wrote. The photo went viral, with almost 2000 retweets and was viewed nearly one million times.
However, a community note was added to confirm that the photograph had been digitally manipulated to change the expiry date to 2024 and explained that the original date on the sandwich was 2019 – when it was available.
