The creator of Red, White & Royal Blue has delivered n update on what fans can expect from the sequel to the hit queer rom-com – and we’re sat!
Adatped from Casey McQuiston’s best-selling novel, the 2023 Prime Video adaptation starred Nicholas Galitzine as closeted British royal Prince Henry and Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz, the bisexual son of a female US president, who go from enemies to lovers.
It was so popular, in fact, that Prime Video commissioned a sequel to the film despite there being no sequel to the original book.
The follow-up film was first confirmed in May 2024 with both Galitzine and Zakhar Perez returning in their roles. And thankfully, McQuiston has come along and shared an update about what the next film will look like.

Speaking as part of Yahoo’s Queer Voices the non-binary author, who is writing the screenplay for the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel, had to play it vague but did share some details.
“What you can expect from the sequel is a glimpse into Alex and Henry’s life after the confetti has finished falling from the first movie, and you have to move forward together as two adults in a real, serious adult partnership,” they said.

The first film ended with Alex and Henry’s relationship being made public by an old flame of Alex’s and the pair defying the fictional take on the British royal family to be open about their relationship publicly.
Alex’s mum, President Ellen Claremont (played by Uma Thurman), also won a second term as president (we wish that wasn’t fiction!) and Alex and Henry celebrated their happy ending.
McQuiston continued: “With pressures and expectations and dreams that might be coming into conflict with each other, and things that might be pulling them and pushing them in different directions and how they navigate that together.”
From what they’re saying, it sounds as if that happy ending might not last forever, though we’re sure Alex and Henry’s love for one another will.

McQuiston also told Yahoo that they are cowriting the film with Matthew López, who wrote and directed the first film.
“We’ve been working on that script and that I’ve spoken to a lot of the cast about the sequel,” McQuiston also said. “And that they’re all so excited about it, and about hopefully moving forward with the next steps.”
In May, Zakhar Perez said he had no idea what the next film was about, but had previously expressed some ideas for what he’d like it to focus on.
“I think we ended the film on pretty good terms with everything. So maybe them living in Brooklyn? You know it’s closer, New York to London,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2024. “Maybe Alex is starting his own campaigning? I don’t know; I mean, I can only dream, so we’ll see.”
Red, White & Royal Blue is streaming on Prime Video now.
