At this point, you’re probably hearing it in your sleep: “Nothing! beats a Jet2holiday! And right now, you can save £50 per person… that’s £200 off for a family of four!”
In lieu of a proper song of the summer this year, the Jet2holiday voiceover has sort of, somehow, inadvertently become it.
Set to the soundtrack of a ten-year-old chart-topping smash, “Hold My Hand” by queer British singer Jess Glynne, the Jet2 holiday advert, which was actually released back in 2022, has become a TikTok sensation.
Often overlaid over some sort of holiday-based disaster – a brawl on a plane, a thrillseeker flying off a water ride, a drunken sun-seeker falling into a pool – the audio has now been used on more than 1,200,000 videos on the platform.
It turns out that the woman behind the pervasive ad voiceover is actually a major part of LGBTQ+ history – at least for queer people of a certain age in the UK.
Actor and presenter Zoë Lister is the person who provided the Jet2 voiceover, but before she somehow became the social media soundtrack of summer 2025, she was best known as the award-winning star of British Channel 4 soap, Hollyoaks.
Between 2006 and 2010 (and then for a brief stint in 2017), she played bisexual tomboy Zoe Carpenter who, after some rocky interactions with men – she was stalked, and then entered into a doomed relationship with a much older man – began an affair with her best friend, Sarah (Loui Batley).
The storyline came to a messy end when Sarah was killed in a vengeful parachuting accident, when newcomer Lydia (Lydia Kelly) severed her parachute strings.
Lydia had been dating Sarah, and was jealous of her closeness with Zoe. She decided to end her own life and Zoe’s, but the parachutes got mixed up, and Sarah took the one with the cut ropes and died.
Lydia then framed Zoe for the murder, and she was subject to false imprisonment for a while, before being found not guilty and released. Lydia then went on to stab Zoe in another murder attempt, before the former was finally arrested and imprisoned for her crimes.
Zoe then left the show to go travelling, while Lister went on to star in a number of smaller shows, including comedy series Staff Room.
At the 2010 British Soap Awards, Lister won the Spectacular Scene of the Year accolade for her involvement in the parachute jump scene.
Thankfully, Lister’s involvement in aviation-based activities is now far more successful: since joining Jet2 as the company’s voiceover artist, she has been beamed through the phones of people all over the world. Truly, nothing does beat a Jet2 holiday.
