I Know What You Did Last Summer star Jennifer Love Hewitt has thanked queer fans for keeping her character Julie James alive for decades.

The 2025 slasher film is a sequel to the 1998 film I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and the fourth installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise. In it, Hewitt reprises her role as Julie James, who is the final girl in the first film.

In this new sequel, five friends inadvertently kill a pedestrian in a car accident and try to cover up their involvement.

However, a year later, a stalker imitating a legendary serial killer comes after them. The group then call on two survivors of the Southport massacre of 1997, Hewitt’s Julie and Freddie Prinze Jr’s Ray.

With the release of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Julie James returns to the franchise after 27 years.

The film also stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon as the main five characters.

‘They are the loudest and greatest fans ever’

With the arrival of this new film, Hewitt opened up about the film’s queer audience. 

In a recent interview, she was asked if she had a message for LGBTQ+ fans who have supported her throughout her career.

“Oh my gosh! First of all, my deepest gratitude for keeping Julie James alive, well, thriving, and celebrated,” she told Out Magazine .

“I feel so celebrated, and I cannot thank you enough. I would want to share, especially in this climate we’re in, that you’re loved.

“You are celebrated, not for who people want you to be, but for who you are.

“I am here, and I am always celebrating you the way that you celebrate me. I hope you feel my love.”

The interviewer followed-up by asking her what it means to be embraced as a “scream queen queer icon,”

“I mean, it’s the greatest compliment in the entire world,” Hewitt replied.

“I love to see people celebrating that Julie James is coming back. They are the loudest and greatest fans ever. I just really appreciate it.”

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer is now out in cinemas and has a 111-minute runtime.

This is the longest film of the franchise; the original film is 10 minutes shorter.

What’s on the I Know What You Did Last Summer soundtrack?

As well as a lot of thrills and blood-splatter, I Know What You Did Last Summer has a varied soundtrack. 

The film features an original score by Chanda Dancy, as well as pop hit needle drops.

Songs featured in the film include The 1975’s ‘People’, Reneé Rapp’s ‘Leave Me Alone’ and Addison Rae’s ‘Summer Forever’.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is in UK cinemas from July 18.
