This company designed a beer bottle with a rounded bottom – and everyone’s making the same joke

Japanese designer Kenji Abe created the concept of a beer bottle with a rounded bottom: and everyone’s making the same joke. 

The concept, created for a 2023 conference by designer Kenji Abe, is going viral on X, and everyone seems to agree that the idea could be easily misinterpreted.

According to Abe’s website, the bottle’s rounded bottom allows it to be “stuck easily into the sand.”

A description of the design states: “Drinking beer while gazing at the sea is special. How- ever, bringing a table to the sandy beach is challenging, and it is difficult to find a flat surface to place your bottle of beer. Hence, the artist conceived this work, evoking the desire to stick a glass bottle of beer into the sand. Users can fully enjoy the sea, sandy beach, and blue sky with this work, enhancing the beach beer-drinking experience.”

Although the concept was designed as part of an Axis exhibition for the 2nd International Conference on Design for Ocean Environments, it’s finding popularity almost two years later. 

On X, images of the design began to circulate after it was shared by the World of Engineering. The design united people through a shared joke: the Kenji Abe bottle resembles a butt plug.

One user wrote in response to the design, “stick into the … sand…yeah, sure.” 

Even the Sandford Police communications account commented, hilariously writing, “In the UK this will end up stuck in someone’s arse.”

In a comment that has been liked more than 9,000 times, someone else wrote, “Finally a beer for bottoms”. 

Another commented, “Because Emergency Room doctors don’t already have enough to deal with.” 

Similarly, an emergency medicine doctor wrote: “Hi, ER Doc here.  I don’t know who needs to hear this but do NOT even think about it.” 

Another pointed out a flaw of the design: “Idk about you guys, but I can stick any beer bottle in the sand.”
