WNBA star Paige Bueckers finally confirms relationship with fellow basketball star Azzi Fudd

Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Paige Bueckers has confirmed that she’s in a relationship with fellow basketballer Azzi Fudd after years of speculation.

During an interview with wagtalk at the WNBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis on Thursday (17 July), Dallas Wings player Bueckers was asked to play a game on how well she knows her D1 (Division One) girlfriend.

At the time, there was high speculation that Bueckers and Fudd were romantically involved, but neither of the players had confirmed the fact.

Grinning ear to ear, Bueckers correctly answered a flurry of questions about her unnamed girlfriend, including what year she won Gatorade Player of the Year (2019), where she ranked in the class of 2021 (number one), and what high school she went to (St John’s).

Then came a number of slightly more telling questions, with the interviewer asking what slogan her girlfriend’s mum had on her T-shirt during the national championships game (Fudd Around And Find Out), what basketball player she was named after (Jennifer Azzi), and what her phone case says on it (“Paige Bueckers’ Girlfriend”).

At the end of the chat, the interviewer posed the big question: “Girlfriend reveal?”

In response, Bueckers confirmed: “It’s Azzi Fudd.”

But the WNBA All-Star hadn’t confirmed the relationship until appearing at the orange event in Indianapolis on Thursday 17 July, when she was interviewed by WNBA Got Game. WNBA fans have speculated for several years that Bueckers and Fudd became more than just friends after first meeting in 2017 while still at high school, where they both tried out for the USA national team.

Both players made the team, and gradually became close. Fudd used to travel to see Bueckers in Washington D.C. so the pair could work out together, and when Fudd was injured back in 2019, Bueckers was the first to offer support.

In 2020, the couple got to play on the same team together, following a campaign by Bueckers to get Fudd to play on her team at the time, UConn Huskies.

In the five years since, fans have noticed that the pair have bubbling chemistry on and off the court together, particularly during press interviews or in social media videos.

Yet speculation about the couple hit an all-time high in recent weeks, after UConn Huskies star Fudd was spotted holding a phone case which had “Paige Buckers’ Girlfriend” written on it.

Fudd had taken the photo in a mirror, which obfuscated the message on the phone case. Yet dogged fans of the duo quickly worked it out, and took it as all but confirmation that they were together as a couple.

Now, that confirmation exists, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled.

“I used to pray for times like this,” wrote one fan under the wagtalk video.

“Literally gasping for air right now, seriously,” joked another.

A third simply added: “My life is complete.”
