Musician, actress and lesbian icon Reneé Rapp has announced a UK tour with tickets on sale soon, and revealed which of her songs on new album BITE ME is inspired by her girlfriend claiming she is “madly in love”.
Ahead of her album release on Friday (1 August), Rapp explained that one of her new singles, “Shy”, is a tribute to her girlfriend and fellow musician Towa Bird, who she described as her “best friend and most trusted confidante”.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Rapp explained that she had felt tongue-tied around Bird when they toured together in 2023. The pair hard-launched their relationship in March 2024.
“I am not a shy person whatsoever, so that made me realise how madly in love I was with her,” she told the news outlet.
“I’d just got out of a relationship and I was so relieved to be on my own, then I was smacked in the face by these feelings… I was a nervous wreck, like, ‘I want to throw up’.”
She added that her “British princess” is her best friend, and that “she wants me to win just as much as I want her to win – and that feeling is so scarce.”
Elsewhere on her upcoming album, Reneé Rapp has seemingly taken playful swipes at both her former employer and her lover.
The single “Leave Me Alone” was thought to not-so-subtly nod to her former show The Sex Lives of College Girls, with the song containing the lyrics: “I took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t f**king/ Leave me alone, b***h, I wanna have fun”.
“Why Is She Still Here?” is also a shady single, with the lyrics taking aim at the ex-lover of her current lover.
“It’s like she’s always in the room. She’s on that towel wrapped up around my head and that note that’s stuck to the mirror I shouldn’t have read,” she rages.
Speaking to the Guardian about the controversy around her recent singles, Rapp said: “It’s like Beyoncé said: ‘You know you that b***h when you cause all this conversation.’”
