The star of the much-delayed Madonna biopic, Julia Garner, has given a major update on the project’s status.
News of the biopic was first announced as long ago as 2020, with the singer set to write and direct the film. Since then there have been several delays and Fantastic Four: First Steps star Garner was cast last year.
Appearing recently on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by her Ozark co-star Jason Bateman, she was asked about her involvement in the Madonna biopic by fellow guest Sean Hayes.
“That’s supposed to still happen,” said self-proclaimed Madge fan Garner. “I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it. I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of [Madonna] and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”

As to how she approached the auditions, which are said to have included a gruelling-sounding boot camp, Garner went on to say: “I just thought what would Madonna do, which is convince you that she deserves to be in this room, and I owned it. I was like, ‘You can take it or leave it. But if you leave it, then that’s on you’.”
Garner also seemed unfazed by the delays, saying: “Anything that’s great, takes a long time.”

After the biopic was revealed to have been paused indefinitely, the next update came in 2024 from Madonna herself, who hinted that the project could become a series instead.
Then in May it was reported that the singer was working with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy on a TV series. The pair, we were told, “had been discussing the project for a while”. Although the show was “starting from scratch”, Garner, who plays the Silver Surfer in the latest Marvel movie, had “remained engaged”.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is in cinemas now.
