Next stop: Saskatchewan. After what feels like an eternity, Chappell Roan has finally dropped her highly-anticipated sapphic ballad “The Subway”, and the reactions are *chefs kiss*.

The star launched a pretty hairy marketing strategy in New York at the beginning of July, where she was also spotted filming the accompanying music video, for the song.

Die-hard “Popstars” will recall the singer debuting “The Subway” back at the New York Governor’s Ball in 2024, dressed as c*nty Lady Liberty, no less. However, the song’s official studio release was yet to come to fruition due to recording concerns, until now.

Released on 31 July at 8 pm EST, “The Subway” marks Roan’s second single in 2025, following on from her sapphic country bop “The Giver”. Although Roan is no stranger to heartwrenching breakup songs, if “Coffee”, “Good Luck Babe!”, and “Casual” weren’t enough to give Taylor Swift a run for her money, then her latest track certainly is.

Roan described “The Subway” as “encompassing everything I love about New York City,” she told fans ahead of the release, “with the hope, heartbreak and healing that it has to offer us all.”

The song perfectly captures the pit-in-your-stomach feeling of running into the ex you’re struggling to get over. “I saw your green hair, beauty mark next to your mouth. / There on the subway, I nearly had a breakdown,” the song opens.

“A few weeks later, somebody wore your perfume. / It almost killed me, I had to leave the room,” the singer continues.

In fact, her heartache runs so deep, she’s even considering moving to Canada to never see her past lover again. “I made a promise, if in four months this feeling ain’t gone / well, f*** this city, I’m movin’ to Saskatchewan.”

And it seems her fans are wanting to pack up and move with her, with many taking to social media to share that “The Subway” has officially “eternally ate”.
