Brighton drag queen Mary O’Kart has been celebrated by Nintendo in an iconic feature, reports The Argus.

Mary O’Kart, whose off-stage name is Harry Cashell, chose their drag name as a nod to their love of Mario Kart games.

True to her name, Mary’s outfits are inspired by the much-loved video games, which has seen her featured in Nintendo Life’s 10 Top Mario Kart Cosplays – From Blue Shells To Bowser, where her Blue Shell costume was praised.

The feature notes: “O’Kart wanted to bring the Blue Shell to life specifically as she thinks it is an iconic piece of Mario Kart history and wanted to honour the item in her own special way. Mary designed the idea, and the outfit was then made by Brighton designer Dannie Aston, with wig styled by Wig_bakery.”

Cashell only recently entered the world of drag, having worked as a dancer on a cruise ship prior to the pandemic. In 2020, he moved to Brighton and now, at 32, he is living his drag dreams.

He said, as reported by USA Today: “Drag was everything I loved, the costumes, the wigs, the glitz and glamour. It’s also camp of course.

“I loved gaming and drag, so I have combined the two. So this ended up as me putting all my passions into an art form.”

Cashell shared that he has been a “huge fan of Nintendo” his entire life. “And with the combination of drag and gaming I thought, ‘I’m on to something here’.

“I have Mario and Pokémon tattoos so I am being true to me, it is my love and passion.”

Cashell has also dressed Mary in a look inspired by Mario’s Rainbow Road concourse. The outfit features a studded blue jumpsuit, a rainbow sash, and Nintendo’s Super Star making a standout appearance on the shoulder.

In another look, Mary dresses as Mario in a red and blue sparkly dress, complemented by a statement red hat.

Comments under a video of Cashell showcasing the look praise his creativity.

“This outfit was a highlight of pride this year,” one person commented, while another wrote: “I just spat my tea out with excitement at this! Slaaaay!”
