Michael Shanks, the director behind new critically acclaimed body horror film Together, has revealed whether Dave Franco’s jaw-dropping nude scene involved a prosthetic.
Together has been wowing cinema lovers since its release last week, with viewers aghast at its many flesh-tastic, scream-inducing scenes.
The film follows real-life couple, Community’s Alison Brie and The Disaster Artists’s Dave Franco, as Millie and Tim, a couple of ten years who are feeling jaded in their lives together.
As the pair – Millie a teacher, Tim a musician – look for ways to move their relationship forward, they move from the city to the countryside, specifically, next to the woods (always a bad move in horror-land).
“Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country,” reads the official synopsis.
“With tensions already flaring, an encounter with an unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.”
It’s been described by critics as “totally unhinged” and “amusingly disgusting”, and sees Tim become uncontrollably drawn to Millie after drinking infected water from a mysterious cave near their new home.
After camping overnight in the cave, the couple wake up attached together in the first of a set of spooky happenings, all due to Tim sipping that water.
His inexorable obsession with his partner leads to the pair having sex in a bathroom stall at Millie’s place of work, with their genitals becoming sickeningly attached together.
still thinking about how fine Dave Franco was in TOGETHER. Mullet, unemployed, scruffy, can’t drive so he relies on you, great body. Just my type I fear. Go watch the movie if you want to see his bare ass pic.twitter.com/z1tutgvMhe

Speaking to Out magazine, Shanks addressed whether Franco opted to use prosthetics for the wild nude scene.
“I think I can reveal that it was prosthetic, but that was such a crazy shot to bring up to the producers. Like, ‘Hey guys, we need to do this shot. Trust me, it’s going to work. It’s going to be great.’ We had such a limited prosthetics budget, and that was a shot that I added a little later,” Shanks explained.
The director shared that initially, the team behind Together didn’t have enough funds to purchase genital prosthetics, but they then got lucky.

“It just so happened that my partner at the time was the lead designer of a sex toy company, and she was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got a bunch of very realistic genitals, just lying around in a drawer in my home office.’
“So, I just took one of those and gave it to the prosthetics guy, and he kind of painted it up. It became maybe my favourite shot in the film.”
Together currently has an impressive score of 91 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, and 75 out of 100 on Metacritic.
Together is currently out in US cinemas, with a UK release date of 14 August.
