Chappell Roan’s got a way of making a hit it seems, as her new lesbian break-up ballad “The Subway” is on course to hit number one on the UK’s charts this week.

According to Official Charts, Roan is set to knock “Golden” by HUNTR/X, from Netflix’s animated Kpop musical fantasy film Demon Hunters, off of the top spot.

It looks like she doesn’t need good luck, babe to get the job done either, as she’s currently 6,000 chart units ahead of “Golden”, which is on course to drop to number two.

If the queer music superstar does manage to bag the top spot with “The Subway” when the official chart positions are announced on Friday (8 August), it will mark her second UK number one single.

“Pink Pony Club” managed to spend two weeks atop the UK charts earlier this year, despite being released back in 2020.

Last year, “Good Luck, Babe!”, the first single to mark her new era, reached a peak of number two, where it stayed non-consecutively for six weeks.

Back in March, her country-tinged dom top banger “The Giver” also peaked at number two on the UK charts.

Over in the US, Roan is yet to achieve a number one single, though “Pink Pony Club”, “Good Luck, Babe” and “The Giver” have all hit the top five.

The Chappell Roan train doesn’t seem to be slowing down globally either, as “The Subway” became the highest female debut of 2025 on the Global Spotify chart.

Following its release last Friday (1 August), “The Subway” debuted on the chart with 8.3 million streams, surpassing Sabrina Carpenter’s new single “Manchild” and Roan’s own song, “The Giver”.

Plus, if Roan does score the number one spot, it could be a double whammy for queer women on the UK’s charts, as Reneé Rapp’s sophomore record Bite Me looks set to hit number one on the UK’s album charts.

While 27-year-old Roan is continuing to release new music, she has refuted speculation that her second album, the follow up to 2023’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, is on the way any time soon.

“It took me five years to write the first one, and it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next. I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out,” she recently told Vogue.

“I don’t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything… I see some comments sometimes, like, ‘She’s everywhere except that damn studio.’ Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.”

During her chat with Vogue, Chappell Roan also revealed why it took so long for her to release “The Subway”, despite her playing it live for the past year, resulting in plenty of fan demand for an official version.

“I was having a hard time getting over this one person, and I just could not get over them,” she said. “When I was writing, I was constantly trying to be like, we’re done, we’re done, we’re done, we’re done. The feelings are still there, even though we’re done.”

She continued: “It took an annoying amount of time to just get it right.”

“The Subway” is out now.
