Grammy Award-winning singer Steve Lacy has said his sexuality is “fluid”.
The singer-songwriter, who won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album for Gemini Rights, which is heavily influenced by his break-up with a boyfriend, has previously shared that he thinks the whole concept of coming out is “silly”.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, published on Thursday (14 August), the artist, known best for his 2022 single “Bad Habits”, which went viral on TikTok and swiftly became a number one hit, opened up further about his sexuality.
The 27-year-old said that, growing up, he felt forced to hide so people wouldn’t make assumptions about his sexuality.
‘Queer is a lot harder to explain’
“For example, I really love dance, all styles, contemporary, tap, hip-hop. I love modern dance. But growing up, I couldn’t explore that ’cause I never wanted anyone to call me gay before I told them I was anything, gay or whatever, you know?”
He continued: “It’d probably be easier if it were just like, ‘I’m g-word,’ but I’m not g-word. It’s fluid, and queer is a lot harder to explain than just being a gay dude.”
Speaking to The Guardian in 2022, Lacy revealed how he struggled to understand his bisexuality while growing up.
In the interview with Rolling Stone he said he was proud of his sexuality, but confirmed he’s not here to represent the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. He also reaffirmed that he’s not willing to position himself as any kind of spokesperson.
He added of his fluidity: “I love how my fluidity has just felt through the music. I feel like a lot of people use the gay bug to market their s**t. And I never did.”
