American Idol star David Archuleta has opened up about his sexuality, clarifying that he’s “still open to meeting girls”.
The “Hell Together” singer, who was raised as a Mormon, came out as queer publicly in 2021. Although he’s spoken about his sexual preferences on social media and in interviews, many of those discussions have involved his experiences dating men as the subject matter.
But in a new interview marking the launch of his latest EP, Earthly Delights, the “Crush” hitmaker has discussed the spectrum of his identity. “For the most part, I date men. But I consider myself queer, so I’m still open to meeting girls. I still do, if it feels right,” he told People Magazine.
“When you’re in a group that’s already misunderstood, and they fought so hard to be seen and visible and understood themselves, and then you’re more nuanced within that minority group, sometimes when you talk about the nuance, people can feel like you’re discrediting their experience or invalidating them,” he continued. “I’m not trying to do that.”
Nonetheless, Archuleta reflected on his dating experiences, adding: “I feel like with guys, it’s easier because, to be honest, I think guys are just culturally and also just hormonally more forward.”

He opted not to share whether he’s currently dating anybody, explaining: “I don’t usually disclose where I’m at in my relationships. I’m very much in my lover boy flirty era, and it’s a very fun time for me.”
In a recent interview with PinkNews, he admitted that being able to be completely sexually liberated is “still a process”, partly given his experience in the church.
“I consider myself more on the demisexual scale of things. I don’t know if it’s from my religious conditioning, but I’ve been out for four years now, and it’s still my experience,” he said.
“I’m fumbling through what my boundaries are, I guess.”
