Firebrand MAGA Republican Nancy Mace has introduced the TRANS MICE Act after US president Donald Trump falsely claimed the Biden administration spent millions of dollars to “make mice transgender”.
Mace, a representative from South Carolina who has made a name for herself as one of the most anti-trans voices in government, shared on social media on Monday (18 August) that the bill will strop the non-existent research from happening.
“The Biden Administration has spent tens of millions of taxpayer dollars on federally funded tr*nsgender research on mice,” Mace wrote on X.
“We introduced the Tr*ns Mice Act to ensure federal dollars are directed toward real priorities for our country, not wasteful and inhumane experiments. Hold the Line.”

The bill, the title of which is an acronym for ‘Transgender Research on Animals Now Stops and Money for Ideological Cruelty Eliminated Act’, seeks to ban federal funds being used for animal research where “the effects of drugs, hormones, surgery […] alter the body of a qualified animal to no longer correspond to the biological sex of such animal”.
The proposed piece of legislation has come from a bizarre speech delivered by Trump in March, where he claimed the Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had found $8 million dollars worth of federal funding used for “making mice transgender”.
“This is real,” Trump said in his presidential address to Congress.
However, this was not true.
At the time, CNN’s fact checkers clarified: “The morning after Trump’s speech, the White House provided a list of $8.3 million in federal grants to health studies that involve mice receiving treatments that can be used in gender-affirming health care. The White House list made clear what Trump, in the speech, did not: The studies were meant to figure out how these treatments might affect the health of humans who take them, not for the purpose of making mice transgender.”

“For example,” the fact checkers went on to write, “the National Cancer Institute awarded $299,940 to one project in 2023 to compare breast cancer rates among female mice and those receiving testosterone therapy. Hormone regulation of breast development is similar in mice and humans, and the research allows for much faster findings than a prospective study in humans.
“And awards totaling $455,120 went from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to two projects between the 2023 and 2024 fiscal years to test differences in the ways an HIV vaccine worked in mice that had received cross-sex hormone therapy. The research has an “ultimate goal of designing an HIV vaccine that maximizes efficacy but minimizes adverse outcomes,” according to the project description on the National Institutes of Health website.”
The Trump administration was not too pleased the false claims were shown to be false and doubled down, issuing a press release calling CNN’s fact-checkers “fake news losers” and adding that “president Trump was right (as usual)”.
Days later, the bizarre claims about trans mice found there way onto the 8 March episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL), who had no qualms about satirising the claims.
In the episode, hosted by Lady Gaga, James Austin Johnson played Trump where he said in one sketch: “Elon’s been doing a good job with DOGE. And he gave me some great stuff to talk about at State of the Union.
“You know, they’re spending $8 million on making mice transgender. Can you believe that? Probably not, because it’s not true. But I said it, and it got a big laugh, and that is addictive.”

On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel also took time to roast Trump, saying: “It’s not real.”
“The government spent money on transgenic mice, which are genetically modified mice they use in lab tests to study disease. It has nothing to do with being transgender,” the host continued.
Transgenic, as opposed to a transgender, refers to when an organism has had its genome altered for the purpose of studying gene functions and for genetic engineering tests.
Transgenic mice are not a new concept in science, with the first one created in 1974 whilst recently scientists in Dallas managed to create mice with woolly fur by altering the animals DNA, as part of tests to create woolly mammoth traits in mammals which is a step towards “resurrecting traits that have been lost to extinction”.
Kimmel questioned: “Other than the word, the ‘trans’ part of the word. You think they know this and just ignore it, or are they so dumb they don’t know how to Google? Or maybe they think we’re so dumb we don’t know how to Google? I don’t know.”
