Drag queen Lil Miss Hot Mess has clapped back at Marjorie Taylor Greene after the Republican called her a “monster”.

Georgia Republican representative Greene, who has a history of hitting out at drag queens, despite the fact her boyfriend, Brian Glenn, previously dressed in drag, hit out at Lil Miss Hot Mess in a bid to justify the Republican’s attack on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

The PBS is known for airing children shows such as Sesame Street, however, the GOP has waged a war against it for allegedly becoming a “radical left-wing echo chamber” focused on “grooming and sexualising children.”

To support this baseless argument, Greene aired a video of Drag Story Hour icon Lil Miss Hot Mess during a committee hearing on defunding the network. She showed the drag queen reading an excerpt from her children’s book, The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish, which Greene called “repulsive” before baselessly labelling Lil Miss Hot Mess a “child predator” – a common anti-LGBTQ+ slur.

In May 2021, Little Miss Hot Mess appeared on the PBS kids’ show Let’s Learn as part of their at-home learning programming.

Taking to social media, Lil Miss Hot Mess poked fun at Green’s comments, writing: “Seriously, while wear it as a badge of courage to be listed among such cultural icons as Elmo, the lows this administration will go to try to erase LGBTQ+, BIPOC, immigrants, Muslims, disabled, and other marginalized people is disgusting. Get a new hobby!”

In a statement, she wrote: “Greene’s distracting transphobia and homophobia harms real LGBTQ children and adults, and teaches nothing but hate. Frankly, I’d be horrified to watch her kids’ show.”

She also declared: “Americans can decide for themselves who the real monster is.”

In an essay for the HuffPost, the drag queen hit out at Greene for being the one that aims to “control minds through censorship,” adding, “drag can be an antidote. And that’s exactly why drag performers belong in public education and media.”

The drag icon also spoke to LGBTQ Nation, saying: “The things that she said about me were especially nasty, and I think in any other context would have been considered a form of defamation or slander.”

But she isn’t going to let the hateful words hold her down. She said of the drag community: “We’re larger than life and we’re not going to back down,”

“In some ways, the art of drag is forged through the kinds of oppression that we’ve experienced historically, and being able to find ways to reclaim the slurs that are used against us and to find joy and humor in the moments of sadness and pain. We’re really good at it.”
