Drag Race star spills tea on season seven RuPaul vs. Pearl fight: ‘More tense, more awkward’

Katya reveals what went down on set during the infamous RuPaul vs. Pearl spat (World of Wonder)

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Katya has spilled the tea on season seven’s infamous Werk Room clash between RuPaul and Pearl, sharing that the ‘insane’ moment was ‘more tense, and more awkward’ than on TV.

While season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race isn’t that far up many people’s rankings of the flagship franchise, despite a stacked cast including Trixie Mattel, Katya, Kennedy Davenport, Ginger Minj and Violet Chachki, it did have its moments.

Violet’s ‘Death Becomes Her’ runway and Kennedy’s Snatch Game aside, everyone remembers where they were during a particularly tense Werk Room confrontation between top three contestant Pearl and RuPaul herself.

After critiques the preceding weeks of the competition, Pearl tells Ru: “You told me I had no personality.” Ru then stared at Pearl, in complete silence, before Pearl asked: “Is there something on my face?”

The moment is a lot worse on TV than it sounds written out – and apparently, it was worse in person than it was on TV, according to season seven stars Katya and Trixie Mattel.

In a recap of episodes five and six of season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race, on their podcast The Bald and the Beautiful, Katya has shared that the clash was “more tense, and more awkward” in real life.

Trixie, who had been eliminated the episode prior, said: “I know that RuPaul has never encountered a single drag queen willing to talk to her the way [Pearl] talked to her.”

“It’s wild,” said Katya of the moment. “It was more tense and more awkward than it was on television.”

The pair clarified that during a Werk Room walkthrough with RuPaul, the rest of the room is “silent”, meaning everyone would have got an earful of the clash.

“This was so f**king uncomfortable, it was so tense, it was insane,” Katya continued. “RuPaul was so angry. It was like, crazy.”

The All Stars 2 finalist went on to say that after the RuPaul clash, Pearl left the room, “for a while, enough to be concerning, enough to be dramatic.”

Katya added: “She was p****d off! People were dogpiling on her. Imagine being told you had no personality. But she does!”
