Josh O’Connor knows how to get audiences into a cinema, and telling them about spitting into Paul Mescal’s mouth in The History of Sound may be a pretty good way of doing that, depending on your preference.

The two actors star in the gay romance film set around the First World War. The film follows Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor) as they set about recording the lives and music of their countrymen.

O’Connor and Mescal appeared at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado over the weekend where the film screened. During a Q&A the two discussed an intimate moment in the film, dubbed “the horniest moment,” by GQ.

The scene in question involves David spitting in Lionel’s mouth during sex. Describing how the first take went O’Connor said, “We were kind of keeping ourselves separate, and really in the characters, and then we did the first take, and it was the spit, and I just – it just dribbled down me.”

He went on to say that “Paul was, like, waiting,” miming Mescal lying there with his mouth open awaiting O’Connor’s saliva. As the men and the audience laughed Mescal said, “If you clipped this without sound it would be…”

We’re not sure what Mescal meant. Either way it’s hilarious and certainly… enticing. Who wouldn’t want to see two of the internet’s boyfriends engage in such an intimate encounter?

The film has had two trailers already, the most recent showing off some of the film’s intimate scenes, as well as Mescal’s singing.

The History of Sound debuted to mixed reviews at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Following those, Mescal hit back at “lazy” comparisons with the seminal queer classic Brokeback Mountain.
