Sydney Sweeney’s biopic of lesbian boxer Christy Martin has been given a release date.
Sweeney’s boxing movie Christy, which follows the life of the former WBC super welterweight champion, known as the Coal Miner’s Daughter, will serve as the inaugural US theatrical release for Black Bear’s new US theatrical distribution arm.
The biopic, which is directed by Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner David Michôd, will get its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival (4-14 September) on Friday.
After having its world premiere at the festival it will be release in theatres nationwide on 7 November.

“We’re thrilled about the upcoming release of Christy, a moving portrait of resilience and defiance from visionary filmmaker David Michôd,” said Benjamin Kramer, Black Bear president of US distribution.
“Led by Sydney Sweeney’s masterful transformation into the iconic Christy, capturing a young woman’s fierce determination to define her own destiny, the film is elevated by Michôd’s elegant direction and enriched by an electric supporting turn from Ben Foster. Both tender and unflinching, Christy is a celebration of persistence, humor, and humanity in the face of unexpected turns.”

In July, the Toronto International Film Festival shared images of Sweeney as Christy Martin, showing the Euphoria star with short, dark, shaggy hair and wearing boxing gear. The images sent sapphics into a frenzy.
“I didn’t find Sydney Sweeney that hot before but now that she’s getting a little d*key with it… I might need to think for a second,” one person wrote.
Christy Martin is considered one of the most successful women boxers in US history and is credited with putting the women’s sport on the map. She won 49 of her 59 bouts, 31 by a knock-out, and was promoted by the legendary Don King, whose other clients included Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman.
The film also stars Love Lies Bleeding‘s Katy O’Brian as Martin’s boxing-rival-turned-wife Lisa Holewyne, and Ben Foster as James Martin.
