Marvel Rivals just introduced Angela – a lesbian Asgardian princess with a trans wife (NetEase/ Marvel)

Marvel Rivals is entering season four, and with it comes new Vanguard Angela – one of Marvel’s most famous sapphic characters.

Though third-person hero shooter Marvel Rivals has been around for a while now, the NetEase game’s roster of 43 characters contains only five LGBTQ+ characters from across Marvel’s extensive back catalogue as it enters season four.

But with the introduction of the game’s next instalment, set to be released 12 September, comes one more member of the community to the fray – and she is not to be messed with.

Angela, full name Aldrif Odinsdottir, is a gigantic warrior and daughter of Odin, who also happens to be a princess of Asgard and half-sister of the God of Thunder, Thor.

In the comics, she is married to a former Anchorite (a male Angel) named Sera, who later transitioned to a woman, making the queer couple a conservative’s worst nightmare.

Angela is being released as part of the first half of Marvel Rival’s fourth season, named The Heart of the Dragon. Popular character Daredevil is being released in the latter.

The one-winged angel will be in the Vanguard class (the Marvel Rivals version of a tank), and is designed as a hybrid class – meaning she has infinite flight, can use multiple different weapons and even a shield. Basically, everyone should be scared.

Angela’s official synopsis reads: “As the Hand of Heven, the warrior called Angela embodies unwavering courage and determination. Able to manipulate Ichors into various weapons and unfurl her wings to soar across the battlefield, she is ready to deliver divine judgment upon her foes!”

Though Marvel Rivals follows its own narrative, character information is derived from Marvel comics – but it remains to be seen whether Angela will reference her wife via voice lines or in-game lore.

In the comics, Angela is explicitly queer, but Marvel’s track record with adaptations of queer characters past the comics has sparked some fans to worry her sexuality will be sidelined.

im curious if they will acknowledge that Angela is a lesbian in her character interactions

The popular PvP game, which in season two gave its male characters bigger butts (no, we’re not joking), features the likes of the X-Men, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and more, all available for players to control and beat the ichor out of each other across maps and game modes.

Season four of Marvel Rivals will also add a new map to the game; K’un Lun – Heart of Heaven, but on 25 September.
