Sydney Sweeney’s biopic about Christy Martin has got its first trailer and the internet, as always, has thoughts.
Christy sees the Euphoria and Anyone But You actress star as the legendary lesbian boxer as she rises to fame but also struggles with her marriage to her trainer/manager turned husband, Jim (Ben Foster)
A synopsis for the film reads: “Christy Martin never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia- until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim.

“But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it – confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”
The trailer shows off Sweeney’s remarkable transformation into the boxing icon as well as the struggles at the heart of the film. “If you leave me I’ll kill you,” Jim warns at one point. “Do what you have to do,” Christy appears to reply.
Reactions to the trailer have been largely positive. Under the trailer on YouTube one person wrote, “Sydney Sweeney is gonna be great as Christy Martin!” Someone else seemed positive as well putting, “This looks amazing!”.
On X, people were even more quick to praise, with one saying: “This looks great, Sydney Sweeney is showing she has amazing range.”
However, one person added, brusquely, “Nothing to offer” and another said, “Did I just watch the whole movie?”

At the time of writing the film sits modestly with a 63% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes from 32 reviews. “Captivating, gritty and heartfelt,” is how one critic celebrated the film. “The performance of a lifetime,” from Sweeney added someone else. One critic praised Sweeney’s commitment to the role but criticised the film for its “limited scope.”
One reviewer called the film “a big miss” while another slammed the film as “basic.” Another critic called the film “bland” and “lengthy” while someone called it “shamelessly engineered to attract Academt [Awards] attention.”
The biopic premiered at Toronto International Film Festival last week. It will be available in US cinemas on 7 November and in the UK on 28 November.
Martin is considered one of the most successful women boxers in US history, putting the women’s sport on the map. She won 49 of her 59 bouts including 31 by a knock-out. She was promoted by the legendary Don King, whose other clients included Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman.
